POSC 292, Public Policy, Spring 2022, Professor Buthman

Exam #1 due Friday, March 4, 2022

Exam: Write a 4-6 page answer addressing either one or both of the following prompts. You can choose what you want to do. You should support your thinking with citations from the textbook or class. You can cite the book as follows: (Rinfret et al., 2018, p 40). You can cite in class discussions as: (in class, date).

This paper is due on D2L by the end of class time on Friday, March 4. You should have a single line at the top of the paper marked as follows: Buthman, Public Policy Exam #1, Sp 22, Your name

  • Your exam should be formatted with one inch margins. Use 12 point, Times New Roman font, double spaced. Important note:  99 pages and below is an automatic C before I begin grading, so it could go lower than that. This is because it does not meet the minimum criteria for the assignment and does not follow the directions. And if you do not format your paper correctly, this is also an automatic C before I begin grading.
  • If you need help in your writing style or advice on how to complete the assignment, check with your TA Cara at duganc@hartwick.edu or set up a meeting with her.
  • You do NOT need a citation page. The only thing you need to cite is the text or in class discussions.

Academic Honesty: Ethics and integrity are essential to the practice of public health. While most public health initiatives in U.S. history have been carried out ethically in the name of public welfare, there have also been glaring examples in which some communities (racial and ethnic minorities, women, the disabled) have been abused by public health researchers, or where research data has been compromised by careless methods. Within this context, it is vital that students of public health demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior by abiding by the College’s policy on Academic Honesty. You are responsible for reading it and knowing it – it is available here: http://www2.hartwick.edu/honestypolicy.

If you have questions, ask Cara.

Grades represent the instructor’s final estimate of the student’s performance in a course. Hartwick College defines grades as follows: (see: http://www.hartwick.edu/academics/registrar/2014-15-college-catalog/educational-policies-and-procedures#grades. )

  • A: indicates original or independent thinking, a command of the interrelationships within the subject, the ability to apply the principles learned, a mastery of the subject matter and clarity of expression.
  • B:indicates a mastery of the subject matter, an understanding of the fundamentals and their interrelationships, the ability to apply that knowledge and to express it clearly.
  • C: indicates an acceptable knowledge of the course content, an understanding of the fundamental principles and a reasonable ability to apply them.
  • D: indicates minimal knowledge and understanding of the course content, with a limited ability to apply the principles learned.
  • F: indicates that the work was not satisfactorily completed.
