Choose one of the following topics based on the plots and settings in the stories from Unit 1.
Each topic requires you to focus on some aspect and to explore why it is important to our
interpretation of the characters or the story. Your essay must have a central thesis—an
argument or debatable statement that will take the essay beyond a simple discussion. This
thesis, provided near the end of the introduction, should argue for the significance of the
setting and provide three main points of support. (E.g.: In Munro’s “The Found Boat,” the
boat itself has both literal and figurative implications as it represents A, B, and C.)
