Learning Goal: I’m working on a nursing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
There are two change theories relevant in nursing and the implementation of change and evidence-based practice. Lewin’s Theory of Planned Change and Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory. Lewin proposed a three-step process for changes to be successful. First, you must unfreeze current status quo which means understanding that a change is needed. Then you must move to make the change happen. Lastly, you must refreeze so that the change that has been made will stay in place and continue to be implemented. Rogers’ Diffusion Theory introduces five changes phases: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. Roger’s theory follows or requires effective leadership for change to be successful. The planning is also very similar to the nursing process which is assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. I believe that Rogers’ Diffusion Theory would be the most beneficial to my capstone change project because of the steps that it follows. Change is inevitable, yet slow to accomplish (Barrow et al., 2021). I feel that this theory offers the highest likelihood of success by the way it presents the information and includes employees in the decision making. My preceptor like to utilize this type of change theory in her role in occupational medicine. She feels that it gives her the highest possibility for success through the knowledge, planning and decision phases.
