Lab report assignment overview

Your lab report will be based on an experiment you complete as part of your Week 4 tutorial preparation. You will then analyse the data from this experiment in your Week 6 tutorial class.  Lectures in Weeks 2 & 3 will relate directly to your lab report content. You will need to write: title, abstract, introduction, results, discussion, and references sections. You will be marked on the quality of all sections. The Method section for the report will be provided for all students; all other sections of the report are to be completed by students individually.

Word limit.  The word count for the entire lab report is 1,500 words. The abstract is included in the word count for this lab report. As the method section is provided, it does not count towards the word count. Please check the student manual for further information on other aspects which are not included in the word count, as well as late and word count penalties.

2022 Lab Report Experiment and Plain Language Statement

What is the experiment about?
The experiment is testing classification learning using novel perceptual stimuli. This experiment is conducted for educational purposes as part of the subject PSYC20007: Cognitive Psychology.

What will I be asked to do?
Should you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a computer-based categorisation task that involves making button-press responses to indicate the category of a stimulus.

What are the potential risks and benefits?
Participating in the experimental task can give you some useful insight into the methods of the experiment and can be helpful for writing your lab report.

None of the tasks are expected to be harmful or intrusive in any way. Short breaks are provided during the computer-based task to prevent fatigue. If you do experience any discomfort, you have the right to withdraw your participation at any time.

Do I have to take part?
No. Participation is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time by simply closing your browser. We encourage you to participate in the experiment to gain a better understanding of the method and the effect of the manipulation.

What will happen to information about me?
Your data will be kept anonymous and will only be used for learning purposes within PSYC20007.

Who can I contact if I have concerns about the experiment?
If you have any concerns about the experiment you can contact the Subject Coordinator of PSYC20007: Sarah Moneer via email sarah.moneer@unimelb.edu.au
