Learning Goal: I’m working on a political science writing question and need guidance to help me learn.
Your answer should be approximately 500 words minimum, with the upper limit at ~750 without the bibliography. Please do not reproduce the question in your answer. This essay must be double-spaced and with 1″ margins for grading purposes; there may be deductions in the writing portion if this is not the case. If you write your essay in 12 point font, that would be 2-3 pages.
Why have U.S. Presidents leaned on the administrative strategy for policy change, using measures such as executive orders, signing statements and regulatory review, instead of approaching Congress to make new legislation? In your answer, you should explain the strategy and use two examples of measures to illustrate how it works.
Essays drafted during this exam will be largely treated as “exam essays,” meaning that writing rules will be somewhat relaxed compared to essays where you have more time. 40 of the 60 points of the essay grade will be based on content. Higher scores will be given for covering all of the essay question in terms of information required, using class materials to answer when required, and giving your informed opinion when requested. An additional 20 points will depend on organization, writing and citations. Please see the rubric below for more information on how your answer will be graded.
Content
This is the largest part of the essay grade, and based on whether you answer all parts of the question with correct information, plus take a position when required.
Organization and Writing
While this essay is written under a time limit, there is sufficient time to have a structure of introduction, body of points and a conclusion; a clear thesis; and there is a chance to run spell check and look over the draft. Your essay should reflect this.
Citations
While there is no required writing style for this essay, you must use a citation method within the body of the essay, and provide a bibliography at the end. This is also the section where source abuse might be graded — but note that this could also affect content.
