How to Develop an Ethics and Leadership Awareness, Analysis, Assessment and Advocacy Guide? Ethics and Leadership 4A Guide Demonstrate your knowledge of the semester material and how to apply that knowledge in this report to improve organizational or community ethics and leadership engagement. Use the semester material to provide the reader with a working knowledge of Ethics and Leadership in the Public Sector. You will explore ways in which the ethics and leadership process influences groups within organizations and communities to achieve a common goal. The leadership and ethics awareness and analysis provides a method to examine and engage in decision making, problem solving, and policy making in the public sector. Steps in the planning and Design of an Ethics and Leadership 4A Guide Create an Ethics and Leadership Awareness Foundation by incorporating the semester material (Weeks 1-10) Ethics and Leadership Analysis – throughout the semester the class discussed and completed the following chart based on the information from the readings to analyze the leadership approaches based on Northouse’s four components of leadership. Process, Influence, Group, and Goals. Identify, describe, and apply the Ethics and Leadership Foundation to create an Ethics and Leadership Analysis tool (see Northouse chart) (Weeks 1-8). Process Influence Groups Goals 1. Ethics and Leadership Analysis – throughout the semester the class discussed and completed the following chart based on the information from the readings to analyze the leadership approaches based on Northouse’s four components of leadership. Process, Influence, Group, and Goals. Identify, describe, and apply the Ethics and Leadership Foundation to create an Ethics and Leadership Analysis tool (see Northouse chart) (Weeks 1-10). a. (PROCESS) What happens – Leadership is a process: it is not a trait or characteristic that resides in a leader, but rather the transactional event that occurs between the leader and the followers. Leadership is a process where an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Leadership is an interactive process between the individual exerting the influence and those receiving the influence. As such, a leader affects and is affected by followers. The tide of power (the extent of the exertion of influence) can be fluid and shift from the leader to the followers and back again. The leadership process may be very brief or last several years. (This is really important for the students to understand. They can be a leader simply by providing a friend with sound advice, and the next moment they can be followers in the classroom or other setting.) Leadership is not a formality that follows a prescribed routine. Some leadership styles will approach this, but none will ever be so set in stone that there is not some degree of flexibility. b. Influence (PLACE) Where and How it happens Leadership involves influence: concerned with how the leader affects followers Without influence, leadership does not exist. The type of influence and the degree of influence are contingent upon the leader’s style, objective, and audience. This influence could be a group process, a perception of the leader, or specific behaviors of the leader that cause influence. c. Groups (PEOPLE) Who it happens to – Leadership occurs in groups: leadership involves influencing a group of individuals who have a common purpose Groups are the content in which leadership takes place. Often this is a group of people with common interests. Sometimes not. A leader must know his or her group. It is part of being a leader. A group is made up of followers. Often there is an elitist attitude when discussing leaders and followers as the former has a degree of power, and the latter have less. A leader are not above followers or better than followers. They are part of the same process and must be understood in relation to each other. d. Goals (POLICY) Why leadership happens. Leadership includes attention to common goals: Why, the goals of why leadership happens has a goal of directing the leadership process toward individuals who are trying to achieve something together. So as you go back over the components – we again see that Ethics is central to leadership because of the nature of the process of influence, the need to engage followers in accomplishing mutual goals, and the impact leaders have on the organization’s values. It is the goal to use the leadership approach to promote and seek organizational or community goals that align with an ethical approach. Leadership is a process Leadership involves influence Leadership occurs in a group context Leadership involves goal attainment Traits Skills Behavioral Situational Path-Goal Leader-Member Exchange LMX Transformational Authentic Servant Adaptive Followership Ethics Team Leadership Gender Inclusive Ethics Analysis and Legal Principles applying the Trinity of Law – Property, Contracts, and Torts, legal issues, and legal analysis Organization/Community Assessment Integrate the Ethics and Leadership Foundation Awareness, Leadership Analysis and Organizational/Community Assessment, into an Advocacy Lesson Plan Apply the Advocacy Plan by creating an implementatiaqwon strategy Complete Your Semester Project
